MISSION STATEMENT
After years of promoting the American art scene, Compound Gallery has realized that something is missing... independent and underground Japanese artists have no voice here and we want to change that. Each time we travel to Japan, we meet more of these exceptional artists, and are impressed by their innovative, fresh ideas. At the same time, the American art scene is hungry for new and original artists to follow. It is time to expose the American audience to Japanese artworks. It is time to bring together the American art collector and the Japanese artist. This is our goal at Compound Gallery.

Introduce yourself...

My name is Ooyama Enricoisamu Letter, as known as OEIL. I currently live in Tokyo and I am an artist. My main activities are making graffiti based art pieces and live painting. I am also making an original theory for my creation, it is called “post-graffiti theory”.
Describe your art...

My art is based on graffiti, but it is also clearly different from graffiti. It is more related with abstract art, using graffiti lines as an image. And live painting is also my important way of expression. I think live painting is something new. It is different from action painting. It can be an original form of expression.

1. What are you currently working on?

I will join some group exhibitions which will hold in London, Paris, Sydney, Taipei and Tokyo. I also have some plan of commercial work. And as usual, I have a lot of schedule of live painting too. I will do live painting in one of the biggest summer music festival in Japan called Metamorphose in august.

2. Why is art important?

It is just because making art pieces gives me a satisfaction. When I finish making an art piece, I feel like I have done the most valuable thing in my life. That’s all.

3. What do you think people walk away with after viewing your art?

I really don’t know, but I hope they feel as I feel, and they think as I think. It will be really a pleasure for me to talk with people about how they feel with my art.

4. How does your typical day unfold?

Painting with good music, watching good movies, reading good books, taking a walk under a good sunny sky.

5. What was the most significant event in your artistic life?

I think it was my self-organized live painting show in Tokyo. It was nice because I did what I wanted to do with my friends. When I do what I really wanna do, it always will be independent.

6. What is your favorite medium and why?

One of the most favorite is POSCA, Japanese drawing pen. But I also like painting brushes. I mainly use wood panel to paint on.
7. What artist do you admire most?
I think Phil Frost is really good. Then I like also DELTA and ZEDZ, dutch graffiti artist. I love Mauri Kunnas too.re the way he creates art work. He adds his own life style and feeling every time he draws the art work. His spirit is amazing.

8. What is your dream commission?

I don’t know…..

9. What are you listening to right now?

I love Pearl Jam and Jeff Buckley.

10. What are your future goals in the art world?

I love painting and making art. So I just hope to be able to keep going my creation and have nice life with nice people.
