MISSION STATEMENT
After years of promoting the American art scene, Compound Gallery has realized that something is missing... independent and underground Japanese artists have no voice here and we want to change that. Each time we travel to Japan, we meet more of these exceptional artists, and are impressed by their innovative, fresh ideas. At the same time, the American art scene is hungry for new and original artists to follow. It is time to expose the American audience to Japanese artworks. It is time to bring together the American art collector and the Japanese artist. This is our goal at Compound Gallery.

A Few of My Favorite Things: Dave White
OCTOBER 5 - 27 2006

Known mostly for his expressionist sneaker-inspired paitings, White has acquired a large following of both sneaker aficionados and art admirers alike. Currently, there are over 200 of his pieces in private collections globally.

White had his first solo exhibition at the tender age of 17 in his hometown of Liverpool. The show was incredibly successful; his pieces completely sold out and he was awarded "Best New Talent in Visual Arts" that year. Word quickly spread about his talent, and White found himself exhibiting pieces at museums and art fairs alongside works by Picasso and Hockney. White now brings the culmination of his best works to Portland's own Compound Gallery.

Katsu Tanaka, Compound's owner, feels that this will be one of the gallery's larger shows this year, "Dave White is such an influencial artist, it's an amazing honor to have him showing here with us. He is currently working on a new series of works just for this exhibition that will be unveiled at the show." The mostly retrospective set up of the show will give patrons the chance to see both how White has grown as an artist and also the chance to appreciate the sheer volume of incredible works he's created.

The artist reception at 7:00pm on October 5 will feature a meet-and-greet and live signing with the artist. The show runs through October 29. Dave White's signature clothing line premier on October 7.

BIO:

Born 19th February 1971 Dave first went to art school at the age of 16.

Even before starting his degree, Dave had secured his first solo exhibition before he was 18. Thanks to critical acclaim from Adrian Henri, Liverpool's beloved poet and artist, word quickly spread. His premier solo exhibition was a complete sell out and he was awarded ‘Best New Talent in Visual Arts'.

3 years and one degree later, after being lucky enough to paint in John Lennon's old studios, Dave's work was quickly picked up by galleries and he was exhibiting alongside the likes of Hockney and Picasso in the west end of London and at international art fairs. Today there are over 200 works in private collections worldwide.

Pursuing his other love as a scratch DJ, Dave spent a few years with break beat band Surreal Madrid, touring Europe and playing many a festival alongside the likes of the Basement Jaxx and Fatboy Slim to name but a few. Live sessions on BBC Radio One and recording at Maida Vale were just some of the highlights.

After going back to the studio and launching this site in Jan 03 Dave has been lucky enough to exhibit worldwide and work with the best in the business. Thanks to the support of sneaker headz and art lovers Dave's work is reaching new audiences every day. Press have been keen to pick up on his unique style of sneaker art and Dave has been working with international galleries keen to expand their audience with his pop art sneaker portraits.
